SfAA Presentation – Portland

It was fun to see old colleagues and friends as well as interact with new colleagues at this year’s SfAA meeting. In the business meeting they reported it was the 3rd largest SfAA ever at close to 1,900 registrants.

Luque, J. “Heat Stress Prevention Strategies among Farmworkers in Georgia,” paper presented at the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) Annual Meeting (March, 2019), Portland, OR.

Open Access Journals – Cancer Health Disparities

Posted on January 27th, 2019 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Open Access Journals – Cancer Health Disparities

In our work as academics, we may decide to publish in open access journals and pay publication fees for the privilege of owning the rights to our intellectual product. However, it might be difficult for us to evaluate the level of credibility that some of these journals might have. We receive barrages of emails asking for contributions to journals with questionable value. I have published some papers with the Biomed Central open access journals, and they have a good reputation as far as I know. We recently published in a new open access journal that has a distinguished editorial board, Cancer Health Disparities. Although it is not indexed in PubMed yet, I hope that it will be soon, so the science on cancer health disparities can be more widely shared with our colleagues around the world. See below for a link to our recent comparative study published in this new journal.

APHA San Diego was a busy meeting. I presented my poster on heat safety discussions with Hispanic farmworkers in the OHS section. I enjoyed seeing old colleagues and friends and meeting new people.

Heat Safety Pilot Study

The Heat Safety Pilot study is underway. We will be collecting surveys with Hispanic farmworkers about their knowledge and practices regarding heat safety. With record summer temperatures soaring and heat index values well into the 100s in June and July, the mantra “Water, Rest, and Shade” has never been more important to remember! Pictured below is the process of harvesting eggplant.

Seen here is Dr. Luque presenting at the noontime panel titled “Health and Health Access” where he discussed his research with uninsured Hispanic immigrant women and their strategies in seeking care. Other papers on the panel focused on other healthcare access topics including the Affordable Care Act. Another session of great interest was the Hackenberg Lecture presented by Alexandra Wolkoff who talked about a free Clinic called Puentes in Philadelphia which serves Hispanic immigrants. They also showed a short film produced by HBO films about the clinic titled Clinica de Migrantes.
